붉은 선 (Red Stroke)

For about the past year, I've been working on a mid-length film here in Korea.  It's my first film set in a foreign land, with a primarily foreign language and cast.  It's been a difficult journey, but a great experience, and I want to share some of that experience with you over the next few posts.

Inspiration/Writing

The film is currently titled 붉은 선 (Red Stroke).  I came up with the basic idea wandering around outside of my brother's house in a neighborhood of Busan, South Korea called Bugok-Dong.  I knew that I wanted to make a film while I was living here, but I just didn't seem to be inspired by anything.  The main source of my inspiration actually came from the design of my brother's house.  It is set in a great location in the middle of a typical older Korean neighborhood, right at a fairly busy intersection.  The specific aspect that inspired me was a patio that is connected to the back of the house.  I won't say too much about it, but it plays in important part in the film.

The writing process has always been difficult for me.  It's the framework for the film and is therefore vitally important.  I know that if I screw this part up, the rest of the film will follow.  I've realized that I am far too impatient with this aspect.  I started writing at home this time around, but I could never focus.  There were too many distractions.  Either my dog would whine to go out or there would be dishes to be done or the Simpsons would come on TV.  Whatever the case, I started to go to a study room about a half hour down the road called Toz.  You get a quiet little room with internet, a light, a seat, and sometimes a whiteboard for 2 hours for about $2.  It's well worth it.  I struggled through writing about half the film here and squeezed in the other half in down times at home.  It took me around a month to finish, and I couldn't have been happier when the process was finished.  More to come later...
